An introduction to using electronic cigarettes

Here’s our introductory guide to vaping with e-cigarettes.

What is vaping?

“Vaping” refers to using an electronic device that produces vapor that the user can subsequently inhale. Think of it as an electronic cigarette.

What is a vape device?

These electronic-powered puffers will generally include several key components. Some may even look like a conventional cigarette; however, many will often look rather funky, almost like a miniature flashlight. Most vape devices, however, will have the following: a battery, a cartridge where the vaping liquid is held, a heating element and some sort of wicking material.

How does it work?

Put simply, liquid is placed into the storage cartridge. This is sometimes referred to as “e-juice” or “e-liquid.” The liquid will often contain some percentage of nicotine, albeit, this is up to the discretion of the user. Some vapers may opt to use non-nicotine liquids in their e-cigarettes.

In essence, the device is powered by the battery. This rechargeable battery has many ways of being charged, depending on the brand. After your device is turned on, your e-liquid is heated to boiling point while being absorbed into the wicking material, where it becomes vapor. Most devices will allow you to set the temperature, meaning you can start low and then work your way up as you become more comfortable. On top of this, vaping liquids come in various flavours, so do a bit of searching to find out which flavours you like the most.

How should you vape?

If you’re just starting out, it is best to experiment a bit to see what works for you. First off, gently inhale from the mouthpiece of your device. Alternate between long puffs and quick, small draws. See what works best with you. Like smoking a regular cigarette, you’ll find that you might cough a bit the first few times. This is completely normal. Also, don’t expect the smoke clouds to be the same as cigarette smoke. Vaping devices often produce thinner clouds compared to cigarette clouds.

Conclusion

Learning to vape will take time. Chances are you won’t be an expert in a day, however, with time you will certainly improve your vaping skills, and more importantly, understand how to use your vaping device correctly.
